The year has already started, but there’s still time to think about goals and resolutions for the countless days ahead. Topics about well-being, aiming to take care of the body, mind, and life are always welcome, right? After all, who doesn’t want to stay in shape, lose weight, adopt a healthier diet, improve sleep quality, and more? Without “miracle formulas”, but seeking daily actions for constant results, check out some wellness trends for 2023, according to “Gympass”:

Get ready to wear your Apple Watch a lot this year! Technological devices like it are increasingly popular and are great for monitoring and tracking performance in physical activities, sleep, calories burned, stress levels and much more. Through the watch it is even possible to control health issues such as hypertension, high cholesterol, diabetes and obesity, monitoring activity levels, heart rate and blood pressure.

2. Sports-specific yoga for everyone

The practice of yoga is becoming increasingly popular, and now instructors are developing new exercise and meditation practices specifically for those who play different types of sports, such as golf, running, and even dance. Whatever your sport, there is a yoga class to help stretch out overworked muscles and balance body and mind.

3. Breathing – a tool anyone can use at any time

Have you ever paid attention to how you breathe? Few people are aware of and take advantage of the power of their breath. The use of ancient breathing techniques like pranayama – can increase energy, reduce pain, increase creativity, improve focus, improve work performance, balance the nervous system, strengthen the immune system, boost morale and even reduce stress.

Ujjayi breathing on the other hand – an audible breath that is inhaled and exhaled through the nose – is a mood booster that reduces stress and increases concentration and focus.

5. Plant-based meals on the daily menu

Vegetarian and vegan food are increasingly invading people’s plates, with tastier, healthier foods that bring benefits to themselves and the environment. Many are even opting for the “Plant 5-2 Diet” – five days a week of only plant foods and two days of meals with animal products. The result? This type of eating includes weight loss and lower risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers.

Last year, due to the pandemic, we had to reframe the moments of self-care and well-being, thinking about the health of the body, mind and soul. With this, we decided to share some habits to include in the routine, which are ideal for moments of rest.

Every habit requires a few days of adaptation before it can be inserted once and for all into a routine. Studies show that we need 21 days practicing a certain action, before it becomes a habit.

1. Turn off screens at least 1 hour before going to sleep. The light from screens before bedtime is bad for our eyesight, but also for our brain, since exposure to blue light can affect your internal biological clock and alter your circadian rhythm.

2. Write about your feelings. Sometimes we can’t express what we’re feeling to another person, so having a little notebook, almost like a diary, can be a good alternative to pouring out your words. Before going to sleep, take a few minutes to reflect on how your day went and to relieve anxiety.

3. It may sound silly, but breathing deeply and slowly is a simple habit, but it helps with self-control when something seems off. The paused breathing communicates to our brain that it is time to relax. Notice: the feeling of well-being is immediate.

4. Take care of your body’s skin. Sometimes we focus only on skincare and forget that the body also needs some specific care, such as hydration and even exfoliation. Both are great allies for skin renewal and hydration. Exfoliation helps remove dead cells and improves the texture of the region, while the moisturizer restores the water lost by the skin, leaving it soft and silky.

The new normal for daily life looks a lot different than it did 6 months ago. Masks are now as essential for leaving the house as keys, hand washing is an hourly occurrence, and social distancing is a permanent fixture in our vocabulary. We’re all doing our part to help stop the spread of coronavirus and protect our friends and neighbors. Another essential when leaving the house these days is hand sanitizer—it’s necessary to kill germs while you’re out and about, whether it’s in a grocery store or picking up takeout when washing your hands isn’t an option.

To be effective at killing germs, it’s recommended to use a quarter-size dollop of hand sanitizer—which means you can cover your entire hand and all of your fingers. Unfortunately, the alcohol ratio in an effective hand sanitizer makes it quite drying and gives off a strong scent (the CDC recommends an ethanol alcohol formula to be greater than 60% to kill germs). But some hand sanitizer brands have added essential oils to help neutralize the smell and create a more pleasant experience (so you don’t walk around smelling like Purell). They may also contain soothing ingredients like aloe vera and vitamin E to help counteract the harsh alcohol and keep your hands a bit more moisturized.

So if you’re searching for a hand sanitizer that you won’t hate using, make sure to check the label for ingredients like essential oils, aloe vera, vitamin E, and marula oil. This will indicate a more pleasant-smelling formula that’s less drying. However, alcohol content will still be high so be sure to follow up with a good hand lotion to keep your skin from feeling too dehydrated. And whenever possible, opt for washing your hands with soap and hot water over hand sanitizer—it should be used only when real hand washing isn’t an option.

As we’ve all experienced at one point or another, sleep doesn’t always come easily. Some nights it takes hours of tossing and turning to fall asleep, or you’re waking up every hour. Health and wellness are top of mind for everyone right now, with people paying especially close attention to boosting their immune system. While there’s currently no treatment for COVID-19, a strong immune system is something we can all strive for to try to protect ourselves from the virus (plus any other cold or flu-like ailments). Of course our health should always be a priority, but right now most of us are looking for even more ways we can put our health and immune systems first. Luckily there are a few easy ways we can boost our immuninty by adding a few activities and foods to our daily routines—from eating citrus fruits to exercising to drinking enough water. Below are 7 effective (and cost-efficient) ways to boost immunity that we can implement into our daily lives.

  1. Get enough sleep: This one sounds obvious, but sleep is the time when your body rests and rebuilds. Eight hours is the most commonly recommended amount, but everyone is different so always listen to your body and do what feels best for you.
  2. Get your vitamins and minerals through whole plant foods: Whole plant foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes are full of the vitamins and antioxidants your body needs to help fight off illness. Plus they contain the fiber your body needs to keep things moving along and prevent the buildup of toxins. Citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits, cantaloupe, mango, and other fruits are high in vitamin C and fiber, so those are a great addition to your diet.
  3. Take a vitamin D supplement: Most people are vitamin D deficient, and especially right now when we’re spending more time indoors. Vitamin D helps your body maintain a healthy immune system, fight off infections, and regulate your mood, so making sure you’re getting enough is extremely important.
  4. Exercise regularly: Moving your body is not only good for your mood (hello, endorphin rush!) but it has anti-inflammatory benefits that boost your immune system. 30 minutes of exercise five days a week is recommended, so go for a walk or run around your neighborhood if you’re able or tune into some of the many IG live workouts brands and trainers are doing right now (check out @revolve or @trainwithdanny‘s live workouts for an amazing sweat session).
  5. Eat fermented foods or take a probiotic: Good gut bacteria helps your body to flush out invader organisms, so eating foods rich in probiotics or taking a supplement is key. Fermented foods like yogurt, kimchi, sauerkraut, and kefir are full of good probiotics for a healthy gut microbiome.
  6. Stay hydrated: Another one that may sound obvious, but making sure you’re drinking enough water is key for regulating your body temperature and flushing toxins. Water doesn’t help fight off germs, but dehydration can make you more susceptible to illness. It’s recommended that you drink 8 eight-ounce glasses of water daily, and if you have trouble keeping track try using a water bottle with a water tracker to keep you accountable.
  7. Manage your stress levels: Long-term stress promotes inflammation (which weakens your immune system and has been linked to chronic diseases like Alzheimer’s), so managing it through activities like exercise, meditation, journaling, and yoga is important for overall health.
