THE 5 TRIDENTS OF FINOLHU VILLAS

A turtle came to welcome me the very minute I set foot on the balcony of my bungalow. And what a bungalow! Huge, romantic, elegant, with a super infinity pool and surrounded by an unbelievable blue lagoon. I started the trip off on the right foot at The Villas of Finolhu, one of the most exclusive hotels of the Club Med chain, classified as 5 Trident Exclusive Collection.

The eco-friendly resort was born six years ago on the island of Gasfinolhu, in the North Atoll in the Maldives, with only 52 jaw-dropping villas, divided between the beach and stilts over the sea. To get there, it takes only 40 minutes by boat from Malé’s international airport. No seaplane is required.

Rin was the name of my “butler”. Imagine the luxury of being pampered 24 hours a day. Just call and in two minutes she would show up with the electric cart for a ride. Punctually, at 4:00 PM she brought the afternoon tea by the pool and you know what the best thing was? She packed my bag for the departure. Is there anything better?

The days started with yoga or paddle fitness classes followed by a nice breakfast on a floating tray in the bungalow’s swimming pool or even in the sea. Then, pause for sunbathing and reading a good book, snorkeling in the bluest ocean on earth, and it was time for lunch on the balcony or on the glassed-in deck of the delicious Motu restaurant. In the afternoon, another dive to find the small fish, turtles and sharks that live in the atoll, kayak trip, walk on the beach, spa and the sun was already getting ready for the farewell show. So it was time to have dinner, sleep, and start all over again.

A perfect paradise to slow down, in a real bubble, in this very complicated moment that the world is going through.

I was very impressed with the resort and would recommend it.

FAIRMONT MALDIVES, A PEARL IN THE INDIAN OCEAN

In the middle of the Indian Ocean, in one of the northernmost atolls of the Maldives, close to India and Sri Lanka, is where the remote and elegant Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi is located. It is surrounded by water on all sides. But not just any sea! The atoll has the most sparkling blue ever seen in the archipelago. A real pearl. The island’s name says it all. Sirru Fen Fushi means “Island of Secret Waters”. So come with me to get to know this pearl.

The arrival at the Shaviyani atoll is surreal. A 55-minute scenic flight in a seaplane that takes off from a platform at the edge of the sea is already part of the program. Pilots in shorts and bare feet or at most in flip-flops attract attention with their laid-back style. After many sighs seeing the vastness through the window, along the 240 kilometers that separate the capital Male from the Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi hotel, it is time to disembark on a floating deck in the largest lagoon in the Maldives. That’s it! You have arrived in paradise. A ring of white sand juts out into the endless turquoise sea. And in the middle of the island, amazingly… there is a wonderful native forest. It was the greenest island I visited in the Maldives.

The bungalows were built in complete harmony with the island. There are 120 accommodations between beach villas, overwater bungalows and tents in the forest, with elegant and unpretentious design. The rooms are spacious, with high ceilings, super comfortable beds with macramé canopies and wooden details. Guests are kindly welcomed with fruit and champagne. The staff is very friendly and you will have a butler to do your every wish.

I can’t stop talking about the pool at the Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi. It is 200 meters long, it goes from one side of the island to the other. It is the largest swimming pool in the Maldives. Very photogenic. It is the hotel’s trademark along with the Coralarium, an underwater museum designed by the famous British environmentalist Jason Tyler and which displays large pedestals in the form of coral colonies. At sunset, the large cube in the middle of the sea looks even more beautiful. Want ti know how to get to the museum? Swimming. With snorkel and fins, in a straight line from the pool. Unusual.

Another highlight of the hotel are the Kata (Japanese) and Azure (seafood) restaurants that overlook the sea, the famous Willow Stream spa, the English boutique Evarae with beautiful clothes, the aerial yoga classes with the Brazilian teacher Lamirse , the open-air cinema that can be set up exclusively for you (just ask your butler) and breakfast served on a floating tray in the pool of your bungalow.

CONNECT WITH NATURE IN A PARADOR COCOON IN CAMBARÁ DO SUL

Brazil is a huge and exuberant country. In the state of Rio Grande do Sul are the canyons of Cambará do Sul with cracks and walls so impressive that you feel small. From time to time the streams that flow over the plateau plunge into unbelievable waterfalls. Of course, this movie set has already been part of many productions, among them the miniseries Casa das Sete Mulheres. That is when this treasure was revealed.

As if the grandeur of the canyons were not enough, Cambará do Sul also drew attention when implementing the first “glamping” (glamour + camping) style hotel in Brazil: the Parador! That now innovates once again bringing accommodations in the shape of a cocoon for you to live an ultra exclusive experience. Staying for a few days in the Parador to get to know the canyons is a more than perfect marriage.

The architectural project is very bold, with a unique design, totally integrated with nature, and full of charm. It took two years to be implemented. It has contemporary lines and values the elements of the region. Which is fantastic. In all, there are seven cocoons that were named after native bee species – such as Mandaçaia and Guaraipo – since they store honey wrapped in a wax that resembles this shape. The tents were built with reforestation wood worked in curves, an added challenge. The result is enchanting.

The cocoons have a capacity for 2 people, are 24 square meters, have a private deck with a Jacuzzi, an ecological fireplace, thermal sheets, amenities by L’Occitane, and lots of pampering and comfort.

Another highlight is the gastronomy. The Alma RS restaurant values the gaucho traditions and brings the best of each season with fresh ingredients. Twice a week, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, a barbecue prepared over a ground fire is served. On Sundays, lunch is country-style.

The Parador organizes all tours for guests such as visits to the National Parks, horseback riding, bicycle, helicopter and even balloon flights.

If you want a place isolated in Brazil, exuberant, where you can connect with nature, a remarkable hotel and great food, you have just found it. I recommend Parador. Don’t miss it. It is magical!

RECONNECT WITH YOURSELF AT THE SIX SENSES BOTANIQUE

If there is a secret hideaway in the Serra da Mantiqueira perfect for you to relax and enjoy nature with all the respect it deserves, it is the brand new Six Senses Botanique. Born in 2012, Botanique was already an oasis of peace on the outskirts of Campos do Jordão, but this week it gained several extra points by incorporating the Six Senses brand in its DNA. Brazil appreciates the gift! It is a privilege to see the emergence of the first Six Senses in the Americas, in the state of São Paulo.

Botanique has been a classic of post-luxury hospitality for almost a decade. It reveres simplicity, Brazilianness, good cuisine and nature. Its glassed-in facilities connect guests with the strength of the Atlantic Forest in an area that has earned the nickname “crying mountains” because it has many springs and rivers. Six Senses aims at sustainability, well-being and hospitality. The junction Six Senses + Botanique has everything to bear fruit.

There are seven super cozy suites in the body of the hotel, with a mountain feel and contemporary design; and eleven villas in the hills. The idea is that there will soon be sixteen new villas and a residential wing. All done in harmony and respect for the environment.

Two very strong points of the hotel are the spa and the kitchen. Six Senses Spa is renowned worldwide. At the moment it has four rooms and a menu of treatments difficult to choose from! All of them are incredible. The cuisine is Brazilian, contemporary and very fresh. Many of the products used are harvested from the hotel’s own vegetable garden or supplied by the local community. The drinks served in the Fire Side Lounge are also special. Some are prepared with probiotics and freshly picked herbs. Oh, and if you want to have a picnic, know that you can order a basket with sandwiches, fruits, salads and wine. Isn’t that great?

To get there it takes only two and a half hours by car from São Paulo and just under four hours from Rio de Janeiro. Now it is easier than ever to live a Six Senses experience in the Botanique universe. Hooray!

There are many shades of blue. But, the Cayo Guillermo turquoise is unique. I guarantee that you will not find another sea like this easily around the world. I’ve been to Cuba twice, I circled the island from end to end and Cayo Guillermo was where I left my heart. White sand, hundreds of starfish and that divine blue. Now you want to know the tricks of the trade?

Cayo Guillermo acquired a Kempinski hotel a year ago for you to immerse yourself in the private universe of Ernest Hemingway. The American writer maintained for years a summer house in Playa Pilar, where he arrived with his boat named “Pilar”, hence the name. A place that inspired many of the author’s works, among them “The Old Man and the Sea”. His house no longer exists. But the story is still alive!

It was there that the beautiful Kempinski Cayo Guillermo was born! The project recreates the bow of a ship that advances towards the sea. And it is not just any sea. It’s “that” sea !!! It is Cayo Guillermo, more precisely, Pilar Beach. If an overwater bungalow is your dream, know that the resort has six overwater villas in addition to the 245 apartments in the central building. And brand new. The pandemic stopped the world a month after its inauguration, but soon it will reopen its doors.

It is a place to walk barefoot in the sand, meditate, relax, date and read a good book having that insane turquoise blue as company. Fresh fish, caught right there, are part of the hotel’s kitchen. And since we are talking about Cuba, of course there is a Cigar Bar. After all, they produce some of the best cigars in the world.

Access from Havana can be done by car or bus, covering 600 kilometers of ground. It was my option to visit Cienfuegos and Trinidad, colonial cities along the way. There are also flights from Havana to Cayo Coco, the islet on the side.

Visit Cuba soon, before the island becomes too uncharacteristic. Remember to book everything well in advance as the logistics are still very complicated. Renting a car, for example, is not an easy task. There are few cars circulating and all very expensive to rent.

Program yourself and go. Cuba is a world apart. And Playa Pilar has one of the bluest blues on the planet. Combine Havana and Cayo Guillermo and you will not regret it!

POUSADA RABO DO LAGARTO, A CAPIXABA TREASURE

That Brazil is immense and beautiful everyone already knows. But that the countryside of Espírito Santo is wonderful, maybe it will be a surprise for you. After all, when talking about a Brazilian state bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, it is assumed that the beaches are the highlight. But do you want to know the truth? The city of Domingos Martins, where the State Parks of Pedra Azul and Forno Grande are located, is the big star with its natural pools, in addition to having an ultra romantic route called “Rota do Lagarto” that will leave you totally in love.

So let’s take it in parts. The first step is to choose a hotel as special as the region. And here’s a powerful tip. You know a place that exudes love everywhere? Flowery. Full of color. Illuminated. Elegant. Surrounded by greenery. Sophisticated. And at the foot of the immense monolith of Pedra Azul that can almost be touched from the balconies. This is the Pousada Rabo do Lagarto. For you to have a more accurate idea of what I’m talking about, let’s just say that it is considered one of the best inns in Brazil. It has only 17 suites. Each one with its own unique decoration. But, all of them super whimsical. I chose the Zermatt Suite for my 4-day stay and I recommend it. It has a fireplace for the coldest days (after all it is in the mountains, at over a thousand meters of altitude), a hot tub to relax after doing the many must-see trails in the region and a lacy canopy bed. Cozier than this? impossible!

Another fundamental point for this pandemic moment, which requires care and isolation, is that the inn follows the Safe & Clean protocols developed by the Circuito Elegante hotel team. This gives a lot of tranquility during the lodging. Havaianas sandals are kindly provided for you to leave your shoes outside; after guests enter the accommodation, no one else enters, there is no daily cleaning service (fantastic for this phase that will pass!); the buffet breakfast was replaced by a Happy Box, which comes sealed, and can be served at any time the guest wants. And so on. Very nice!

In terms of location, it couldn’t be more perfect. Pousada Rabo do Lagarto is located 100 kilometers from Vitória, at the entrance of the Romantic Route, a 7 km stretch full of craft shops, cafes and restaurants, which you can walk from the hotel. Without a car you can easily reach Marietta Delicatessen, Tuia Gastronomia e Arte, Taruira Food Truck, the Da Tutte Mani store … Walking a little further are the Alecrim and Dom Due restaurants. Very good!

If you do the trail, I recommend the Pedra Azul, with a 6 km extension (round trip) with a beautiful dip in the natural pools, and the Forno Grande, 3 km (round trip) with two waterfalls along the way, gazebo and natural pools. From the Gods!!!

Now I’m going to ask you a favor, don’t spread this secret.

CANOUAN TO DREAM IN SHADES OF BLUE

Finally the vaccine against all this madness caused by the coronavirus is coming. But, it will still take a little time for us to have security to travel freely around the world. Isolated places are still the best choice for now. And in terms of exclusivity, the island of Canouan, located in the heart of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, in the archipelago of the Grenadines, in the Caribbean, leads the way.

In this little piece of paradise, the Mandarin Oriental Canouan reigns absolute with its 26 suites and 14 extremely tasteful colonial style villas. It is the only hotel on the island and one of the most luxurious destinations in the Caribbean. The rooms are huge, the decor has details in pink, the bathroom is gigantic and all in marble. The property has a marina, golf course, tennis court, children’s structure, a great spa, stunning blue beaches, white sand and one of the largest natural coral reefs in the Caribbean. The place is so isolated and special that it has become a stronghold of celebrities.

The main beach at Mandarin Oriental Canouan is Godahl Beach, facing the Atlantic Ocean. However, there are several others, less busy and even with beach clubs for guests, within the state park where the hotel is located, which can be accessed with a golf cart, such as Shell Beach and L’Ance Guyac Beach. Keep in mind that the infinity pool will also steal your heart. In addition, you can take boat trips to the neighboring islets and for the more adventurous, there are hiking trails with incredible views.

There are five restaurants within the hotel. All very good and with impeccable service. And there are four others at the Grenadines Estate, a private property that occupies 2/3 of the island, where the hotel is located.

Right now, remote places like the Mandarin Oriental Canouan are the best choice. The island can be accessed from Barbados, Granada or Santa Lucia, via Miami or Panama City.

YACHT LA PINTA TO SAIL THE GALAPAGOS

The biggest question on a trip to the Galapagos is how to explore the archipelago in the best way. After all, there are 19 small islands and 13 slightly larger ones, of which only 4 are inhabited. And each of them keeps its own secrets. Stay on land or throw yourself into the sea? The answer is easy. If you are not one of those people who easily get seasick, take a cruise! It will be easier to access all the corners of this paradise. How long? As long as you can. Galapagos is unbelievable! What boat? Yacht La Pinta. Perfect!!!

I arrived at Yacht La Pinta after doing a lot of research on the Galapagos. I wanted a boat that was small, safe, comfortable, attentive to the environment and with good safety protocols in this pandemic moment. I found it! The Yacht La Pinta is one of the 3 boats belonging to the company Metropolitan Touring that was created exactly with the objective of helping in the environmental preservation of the archipelago that had been suffering from attacks by pirates.

The boat is super charming, has 24 cabins and capacity for 48 passengers. It was recently renovated and its design is contemporary. The rooms are large and well lit. In the bathroom L’Occitane amenities that I love. In addition, the staff is all very kind. The tours are made in groups of a maximum of 11 people so as not to make the animals uncomfortable. Naturalistic guides accompany and explain everything about the species of the archipelago that are beyond exotic. Hiking, kayaking, stand up paddle, boat ride with glass bottom and snorkeling are among the activities available for the adventure. And what an adventure!

I chose a 5-day tour of the eastern islands of the archipelago and regretted not having stayed twice as long. Galapagos is awesome. Each island has its peculiarities. I started the cruise on the island of Baltra, where the airport is. The first stop was at Plaza Sul Island for a sunset trek. As a company, sea lions, land iguanas and hundreds of birds taking care of their young. An emotion like no other. And at each stop, the scenery changed, the animals showed their differences in terms of adaptation and the surprises only increased. On the island of Santa Fé live iguanas of an orange tone that only exist there. In San Cristobal the stars were the giant tortoises that weigh up to 400 kilos. Walking on the beach of Cerro Brujo, where Darwin landed in 1835 is more than special. On the island of Española we were greeted by a school of dolphins before taking a walk among hundreds of marine iguanas.

You know when it’s time to go and you’re not ready to leave yet? It was like that in the Galápagos. What a dream of a place. A trip that brings a lot of reflection and beautiful teachings.

IT’S CHRISTMAS IN LONDON

If you love Christmas raise your hand! And if the date is celebrated in London, even better. I already told you that my darling city in Europe is London. I have such intimacy with the Queen’s Land that I don’t even know how to explain it. A lot of passion.

I love the cosmopolitan atmosphere, the black taxis, the red double-decker buses, the parks, the restaurants, the always busy streets, the many museums with free admission, without the lines, the five o’clock tea, the palaces. And, of course, I have a darling hotel, all glass, with a powerful view of the whole city. Want me to tell you my secret?

It is the Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard that is reopening its doors right now and welcomes guests with a Christmas festival inspired by the Austrian Alps. Imagine the charm of the five o’clock tea served with this theme. And entitled to Schnitzzel and Raclette. A dream! Keeping in mind that the hotel’s tea is one of the best in London.

The hotel that is my sweetheart will be dressed to celebrate Christmas and New Year’s Eve until March. During this period the menu of the restaurant will be adapted to the “post ski” mood. The most interesting thing is that the whole decoration was designed within a sustainability program, which I value more and more when I travel.

The good news is that London is already receiving visitors from other continents.
