There was a time not too long ago when the coolest hairstyle you could possibly rock was your hair pulled back into a ponytail or bun with two tiny pieces pulled out in the front. This was the look of the ’90s, and then it went out of style. Fast forward more than 2o years later, and the tiny tendril hair trend is coming back in a big way for spring 2020. The hairstyle has already been spotted on fashion girls like Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber, so it’s only a matter of time before everyone is rocking it—Cue the ’90s flashbacks.

The best part of this hair trend is it’s shockingly simple to do, it only requires two steps to complete. First, start by pulling all of your hair back into a ponytail or bun at whatever height feels comfortable for you—both low and high look equally cool—and secure it with a hair tie. You can also use a large alligator clip if you want to make it feel really ’90s. Then, pull just a few of the shorter front pieces of your hair out creating a bit of fringe to frame your face. That’s it, you’re done! To make sure your hair stays in place you can set it with a bit of hairspray. Products like Bumble & Bumble’s Spray de Mode and Amika’s Fluxus Touchable Hairspray are great options to give you flexible hold that will move with you but won’t fall out.

This throwback hairstyle can be worn with just about any outfit, anytime of day or night. It’s perfect for a casual jeans-and-t-shirt outfit during the day, or a fun party dress for a night out. You can also really lean into the ’90s style by pairing this hair trend with pieces like a slip dress or loose jeans and tons of gold jewelry. Whatever you choose to pair it with, this hairstyle keeps your hair off your shoulders and away from your face, but thanks to the loose pieces in the front it will never feel too stiff or uptight—It adds a playful attitude to any look.

There are tons of exciting spring hair trends popping up to try this year, but one of the easiest (and coolest!) is the rope braid. This sleek hair style has fluctuated in popularity over the years, with braids going in and out of style constantly. It’s characterized by slicking the hair back into a ponytail and then braided down almost to the end. It’s most often seen with all the hair completely slicked back, but it also looks super chic with a few strands hanging loose around the face. We saw this style all over the Spring 2020 runways with shows like Self-Portrait, Ulla Johnson, Christian Siriano, and Bevza sending models down the catwalk with various versions of rope braids.

This is the perfect hairstyle for spring as it keeps your hair off and away from your face as the temperatures start to rise. You won’t have to worry about frizz or flyaways, and having the hair off your neck is guaranteed to keep you cooler. It’s also a great opportunity to showcase cool makeup or a special outfit, as your hair is pulled up and away to leave the focus on another aspect of your look. A chic cat eye or bold shadow will really stand out next to a rope braid. However, it adds an interesting pop of texture to your look between the sleek top and braided ponytail. Necklines like a high collar, off-the-shoulder, deep V, or strapless are also highlighted in a beautiful way when paired with a rope braid.

Recreating this style is fairly simple, only requiring a few products and just a bit of arm flexibility to reach the back of your head. First, you’ll want to slick all your hair back into a ponytail at whatever height your comfortable with—it can be a high pony if you like, otherwise the middle of your head is great. Slicking the hair back with a mousse to help with hold is recommended to keep flyaways in check and add some shine to your strands. Products like Alterna’s Densifying Styling Mousse or Virtue’s Moisture-Defining Whip work great for this. You could also try a hair oil like Bumble & Bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil or Kérastase’s Ultimate Oil Serum for hold and shine. Once the hair is secured into a ponytail, braid the ponytail all the way to the ends and secure with an elastic that’s the same color as your hair. Finish off with a solid mist of hairspray all over the head and ponytail to hold everything in place and ensure no flyaways get out. A stronger hairspray works best for this, like Moroccanoil’s Luminous Hairspray Strong Finish or Bumble & Bumble’s Finish Firm Hold Hairspray. If you feel like your hair isn’t shiny enough, add one final spritz of a product like Ouai’s Hair & Body Shine Mist for that extra bit of brightness.

While hair color and style trends are ever changing, there are certain cuts and lengths that will always be considered cool. One of those styles is undeniably the castle bob—it always looks effortlessly chic and has an air of sophistication surrounding it. Named after famous ballroom dancer Irene Castle who popularized this cut in the ’20s, the castle bob is a short-to-medium style hair length with some fringe at the front. We saw a resurgence in the bob’s popularity a few years back and it hasn’t lost any steam. Fashion’s coolest people are still loving this short, polished hairstyle and it’s expected to be one of the biggest hair trends for spring.

One of the best parts of the castle bob (and probably one of the factors that makes it so widely loved) is that it looks amazing on every face shape and hair type. Whether your face is more oval, square, or round, a castle bob is sure to flatter your angles. The same goes for texture—fine, straight, thick, curly, whatever, a castle bob mixes well with hair of all types. There are a few variations of bobs you can request depending on how you plan on styling it. You can add bangs, slightly longer pieces up front, or some fringe around the face to make this style your own and the most complimentary to your unique face and style.

Styling your castle bob will depend on what look you’re going for, but generally there are a few products that will help you along the way. A good hair oil will add shine and help tame and hydrate the ends of you hair—Kératase, Bumble & Bumble and Playa make great options for this. A volume spray will also help lift and thicken your style, so brands like Amika and Alterna are good choices. Finally, finishing off your style with a texture spray will add some grit and dimension to your hair. If you’re looking for texturizing products that not only work well but smell great, try IGK, Sachajuan, or Oribe.
