IMMERSION IN THE AMAZON RAINFOREST AT JUMA AMAZON LODGE

Arriving in the Amazon means discovering a parallel universe. An unknown world, mystical, strong, enchanted and surprising from the first moment to the last. It is a place where your senses are heightened as everything takes on great proportions: the symphony of birds, the designs formed by the trees in the jungle, the grandeur of the rivers, the darkness of the night, the power of the sun. Everything is so alive, so vast, but at the same time so lonely, that you have the distinct feeling of being swallowed by the magnitude of the forest as if you were a tiny grain of sand. No matter how hard I try, I won’t be able to clearly explain the whirlwind of emotions that will be awakened.

Start by choosing a very remote lodge in the Amazon Rainforest, one that you need to get to by boat, but that has a good structure for you to feel safe while exploring the rich fauna and flora of this region that holds great cultural potions of indigenous and riverine peoples. My tip is the Juma Amazon Lodge.

The hotel was born more than 20 years ago, in an area of 7 thousand hectares completely preserved, three hours away by boat or 30 minutes by seaplane, from Manaus. Its main differential is the forest itself. It has 19 rustic and comfortable bungalows, all of them with hammocks on the veranda. The restaurant is delicious, with typical regional cuisine. Juma Lodge has an incredible river pool, all protected by screens so that the animals don’t cause any surprises.

It is the perfect alternative to have an authentic experience of connecting with the Amazon and disconnecting from the digital world as there is no television and Wi-Fi is very limited. Experience forest walks, canoe rides along rivers, alligator spotting at night, dolphin watching, contact with the riverside population and the feeling of living in another time and space.

The Amazon Rainforest enters through your pores with such force that you will never forget the gifts of respect, belonging, reverence, poetry, and spirituality that Mother Nature will subtly blow through. I recommend living a jungle immersion! A remarkable and transforming experience.

There are many shades of blue. But, the Cayo Guillermo turquoise is unique. I guarantee that you will not find another sea like this easily around the world. I’ve been to Cuba twice, I circled the island from end to end and Cayo Guillermo was where I left my heart. White sand, hundreds of starfish and that divine blue. Now you want to know the tricks of the trade?

Cayo Guillermo acquired a Kempinski hotel a year ago for you to immerse yourself in the private universe of Ernest Hemingway. The American writer maintained for years a summer house in Playa Pilar, where he arrived with his boat named “Pilar”, hence the name. A place that inspired many of the author’s works, among them “The Old Man and the Sea”. His house no longer exists. But the story is still alive!

It was there that the beautiful Kempinski Cayo Guillermo was born! The project recreates the bow of a ship that advances towards the sea. And it is not just any sea. It’s “that” sea !!! It is Cayo Guillermo, more precisely, Pilar Beach. If an overwater bungalow is your dream, know that the resort has six overwater villas in addition to the 245 apartments in the central building. And brand new. The pandemic stopped the world a month after its inauguration, but soon it will reopen its doors.

It is a place to walk barefoot in the sand, meditate, relax, date and read a good book having that insane turquoise blue as company. Fresh fish, caught right there, are part of the hotel’s kitchen. And since we are talking about Cuba, of course there is a Cigar Bar. After all, they produce some of the best cigars in the world.

Access from Havana can be done by car or bus, covering 600 kilometers of ground. It was my option to visit Cienfuegos and Trinidad, colonial cities along the way. There are also flights from Havana to Cayo Coco, the islet on the side.

Visit Cuba soon, before the island becomes too uncharacteristic. Remember to book everything well in advance as the logistics are still very complicated. Renting a car, for example, is not an easy task. There are few cars circulating and all very expensive to rent.

Program yourself and go. Cuba is a world apart. And Playa Pilar has one of the bluest blues on the planet. Combine Havana and Cayo Guillermo and you will not regret it!

POUSADA RABO DO LAGARTO, A CAPIXABA TREASURE

That Brazil is immense and beautiful everyone already knows. But that the countryside of Espírito Santo is wonderful, maybe it will be a surprise for you. After all, when talking about a Brazilian state bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, it is assumed that the beaches are the highlight. But do you want to know the truth? The city of Domingos Martins, where the State Parks of Pedra Azul and Forno Grande are located, is the big star with its natural pools, in addition to having an ultra romantic route called “Rota do Lagarto” that will leave you totally in love.

So let’s take it in parts. The first step is to choose a hotel as special as the region. And here’s a powerful tip. You know a place that exudes love everywhere? Flowery. Full of color. Illuminated. Elegant. Surrounded by greenery. Sophisticated. And at the foot of the immense monolith of Pedra Azul that can almost be touched from the balconies. This is the Pousada Rabo do Lagarto. For you to have a more accurate idea of what I’m talking about, let’s just say that it is considered one of the best inns in Brazil. It has only 17 suites. Each one with its own unique decoration. But, all of them super whimsical. I chose the Zermatt Suite for my 4-day stay and I recommend it. It has a fireplace for the coldest days (after all it is in the mountains, at over a thousand meters of altitude), a hot tub to relax after doing the many must-see trails in the region and a lacy canopy bed. Cozier than this? impossible!

Another fundamental point for this pandemic moment, which requires care and isolation, is that the inn follows the Safe & Clean protocols developed by the Circuito Elegante hotel team. This gives a lot of tranquility during the lodging. Havaianas sandals are kindly provided for you to leave your shoes outside; after guests enter the accommodation, no one else enters, there is no daily cleaning service (fantastic for this phase that will pass!); the buffet breakfast was replaced by a Happy Box, which comes sealed, and can be served at any time the guest wants. And so on. Very nice!

In terms of location, it couldn’t be more perfect. Pousada Rabo do Lagarto is located 100 kilometers from Vitória, at the entrance of the Romantic Route, a 7 km stretch full of craft shops, cafes and restaurants, which you can walk from the hotel. Without a car you can easily reach Marietta Delicatessen, Tuia Gastronomia e Arte, Taruira Food Truck, the Da Tutte Mani store … Walking a little further are the Alecrim and Dom Due restaurants. Very good!

If you do the trail, I recommend the Pedra Azul, with a 6 km extension (round trip) with a beautiful dip in the natural pools, and the Forno Grande, 3 km (round trip) with two waterfalls along the way, gazebo and natural pools. From the Gods!!!

CANOUAN TO DREAM IN SHADES OF BLUE

Finally the vaccine against all this madness caused by the coronavirus is coming. But, it will still take a little time for us to have security to travel freely around the world. Isolated places are still the best choice for now. And in terms of exclusivity, the island of Canouan, located in the heart of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, in the archipelago of the Grenadines, in the Caribbean, leads the way.

In this little piece of paradise, the Mandarin Oriental Canouan reigns absolute with its 26 suites and 14 extremely tasteful colonial style villas. It is the only hotel on the island and one of the most luxurious destinations in the Caribbean. The rooms are huge, the decor has details in pink, the bathroom is gigantic and all in marble. The property has a marina, golf course, tennis court, children’s structure, a great spa, stunning blue beaches, white sand and one of the largest natural coral reefs in the Caribbean. The place is so isolated and special that it has become a stronghold of celebrities.

The main beach at Mandarin Oriental Canouan is Godahl Beach, facing the Atlantic Ocean. However, there are several others, less busy and even with beach clubs for guests, within the state park where the hotel is located, which can be accessed with a golf cart, such as Shell Beach and L’Ance Guyac Beach. Keep in mind that the infinity pool will also steal your heart. In addition, you can take boat trips to the neighboring islets and for the more adventurous, there are hiking trails with incredible views.

There are five restaurants within the hotel. All very good and with impeccable service. And there are four others at the Grenadines Estate, a private property that occupies 2/3 of the island, where the hotel is located.

Right now, remote places like the Mandarin Oriental Canouan are the best choice. The island can be accessed from Barbados, Granada or Santa Lucia, via Miami or Panama City.

PIKAIA LODGE, A PARALLEL UNIVERSE

There is a place where life has set its own rules. Different from anything you can imagine. A totally volcanic archipelago, in the Pacific, a thousand kilometers off the coast of Ecuador. Singular! A parallel universe where birds have blue feet, sea lions are docile, iguanas feed at sea and turtles seem to have come directly from Jurassic Park. Welcome to Galapagos! One of the most impacting and unusual places in the world. Where Charles Darwin was inspired to write nothing less than the Theory of Evolution.

To explore this magical corner, declared a Natural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco, you will need at least one week. There are only 4 inhabited islands in the archipelago: Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, Isabela and Floreana. It is important to choose a hotel that greatly respects this ecosystem and that focuses on sustainability. Do you want the best tip? Pikaia Lodge. A super exclusive hotel, with only 14 accommodations, isolated in the cone of an extinct volcano, with impeccable service, luxurious standard and elected by Relais & Chateux as number one in sustainability, on the 2021 list.

Pikaia was built to have the least impact on the environment. Its support columns were brought ready made of steel, a cleaner material. External floors and walls are covered with natural lava stones taken from the island itself. Rainwater is collected in large reservoirs, as water is a precious asset in the archipelago. Solar panels and wind turbines are used to produce energy. Very cool! We need to be aware of these details and value responsible properties, especially in the moment we live. Tremendous respect for nature. Now that’s luxury!

But, at the Galapagos Islands a good boat is a must in order to fully explore. And you know what? I was at the end of November in Galápagos and saw dozens of albatrosses, magnificent frigates and blue paws taking care of their young. You can get very close to the birds because as the animals have no terrestrial predators, they are not afraid of those who approach. I swam with sea wolves, iguanas and turtles. Besides the water being an unbelievably beautiful blue!

Before going to the Galápagos, watch the 3 episodes of the documentary Galápagos 3D, by David Attenborough and read the Sapiens by Yuval Harari. This will help you to understand things better. To relax at the end of the day after so much adventure, Pikaia has a beautiful infinity pool and a beautiful spa. A highlight is also the delicious cuisine of chef Carlos Moran.

The Dolomites alone make your eyes sparkle. They are listed among the 50 Italian areas protected by UNESCO. They are part of the Eastern Alps and some of their mountains are over 3,000 meters high. A spectacular place both in winter and summer. In winter there are more than 1,200 kilometers of ski slopes of all levels. In summer, the trails on foot or by bike, the many lakes and rocky cliffs that attract climbers are the main attraction.

Now add to that an impeccable hotel, hidden in the mountains, charming and full of glamour. Yes! It exists. It is the coveted Rosa Alpina, in the village of San Cassiano, commanded for three generations by the Pizzinini family and that now gains reinforcement by sealing a partnership with my favorites in the hotel industry, the Aman group.

Have you thought of the perfection in the form of accommodation? Well, that’s exactly what it is. HELLO, AMSTERDAM! THE HOTEL DE L’EUROPE IS BACK!

If there is one special place in this world that I never get tired of seeing and seeing again, it is Amsterdam. It is the capital of Holland, the largest city in the country and also the most visited. It is fascinating. It’s friendly. It has a personality of its own, a language that is difficult to understand, it is super psychedelic, liberal, erotic, colorful, florid and full of history. But what calls my attention the most, for its peculiarity, are its 165 channels full of boats and its thousand bridges. After all, Amsterdam is 40 centimeters below sea level and is a tremendous engineering work.

Once in Amsterdam, the order is to get on a bike and ride out wherever you want to enjoy the charming cafes, the good restaurants, its more than 50 museums, taste a good beer, snoop the design stores, be enchanted by the architecture, the mills, the tulips, the boat houses, the most alternative neighborhoods and everything that stands out.

Walk through Dam Square, where the name AmsterdamDAM comes from, and watch the coming and going of the crowd. The square is the central point from where everything spreads. Visit some of the many museums. I love the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the exciting Anne Frank Museum. Go to the alternative NDSM Werf, by ferry, a place different from everything. To ensure strong emotions venture into the Over The Edge swing at the top of A’Dam Tower. With children go to the Nemo Science Museum. Even though you might find it a little strange, take a walk around the Red Light District at dusk, prostitution is legalized in the Netherlands, and the neighborhood is part of the local culture. And, be sure to try the organic restaurant Da Kas, inside a greenhouse. Amazing.

Now for a powerful hosting tip. Amsterdam’s most luxurious and traditional hotel, De L’Europe, has reopened its doors after taking advantage of the pandemic’s period of seclusion to receive a major renovation in the common areas, bars and restaurants. Its historic grandeur and elegance are extremely captivating. 17th century art and period furniture were mixed with local handicrafts and modern elements. It is such a cozy, quiet place, away from the buzz of the central region. There, I lived incredible days, within Dutch culture and felt at home. I already want to go back to see the new wing called ‘t Huys, where there is a bookstore, a florist, the Skins Spa and the Italian trattoria Graziela.

Take note of this tip. You will love the experience of living a few days in Amsterdam immersed in the authenticity of the local culture.

A SECRET CALLED MASHPI LODGE

The doors of the world slowly begin to open. Time to make careful choices, away from urban agglomerations and full of connection with nature. Sustainability counts many points in favor. Charm too as well as security. Want a good tip in the Ecuadorian jungle, a few hours from Quito?

It is impossible to resist the charms of Mashpi Lodge. One of the most sustainable buildings in the world, with spectacular architecture and fully in tune with the forest around it. Suffice to say that the lodge was chosen among the 10 Epic trips of 2019, received the award for best ecolodge in Latin America and is a member of the National Geographic Lodges of the World. It’s That simple!

This treasure is three hours from Quito, Ecuador and was born in 2001 on the initiative of a group of environmentalists who joined forces to buy a reserve in the incredible region of Choco, with the objective of protecting it from deforestation. The fauna has more than 400 species of birds, 120 of amphibians and reptiles and the flora is very rich. There are trails, observatories and a fun gondola called Dragonfly that floats high in the forest and makes you live an unusual experience.

In addition, the lodge is close to beautiful waterfalls and has yoga and meditation classes. Everything we need to wash our souls and quiet our hearts after this crazy pandemic that made us tremble.

If you think you will find a simple environment with insects everywhere, you are very wrong. The rooms are luxurious, with contemporary design, all glass and designed to make you feel inside the forest, but surrounded by great comfort. There are only 24 accommodations. If you want to enjoy the forest through the glass windows, without leaving the room is your option, as Mashpi Lodge has reinvented the way you can experience nature. The cuisine is excellent, favoring ingredients from the Andes, including exotic cocktails.

This is one of those experiences that we deserve to live at least once in our lives, in contact with a very revered nature and surrounded by respect.

And since we are talking about Ecuador, take the opportunity to combine the trip with a few days in the Galápagos. But that is a topic for another detailed conversation, because it is also jaw-dropping.

Spooky stories, enchanted forests and haunted castles are not lacking in Scotland. From the alleged appearances of the Lake Ness monster, to the strange legends that spread through the streets and pubs of the Scottish capital, everything is a mystery. So much so that the city is reputed to be the most “haunted” in the world. And the many sinister movies that have used those scenes as a backdrop only fuel that fame. Harry Potter, one of the world’s best-known witches was born where? In Edinburgh. Will you face the Scottish bumps? Well, I guarantee it’s worth the saga. Scotland is beautiful and full of personality. Land of Whiskey, of men in kilts, of bagpipes.

Of course, for the experience to be noteworthy, the accommodation needs to be iconic. How about a hotel that has already been frequented by Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor?

The Balmoral is a luxury hotel, by Rocco Forte Hotels, with 187 classic accommodations, in a historic building, of somber colors, stunning, that marks the horizon of Edinburgh for over a hundred years. It is famous for its excellent cuisine. The Number One restaurant has a Michelin star. The Brasserie Prince is more trendy and the popular afternoon tea is served at the Palm Court. But, the news is that the hotel has just received five stars from the renowned Forbes Travel Guide. It is the first hotel in Scotland to receive this award. A super honor that ranks the most luxurious properties in the world. The interesting thing is that inspectors stay anonymously for two nights, at least, to evaluate more than 900 items with an emphasis on the service standard to help travelers in their choices around the world. Isn’t that cool?

TULUM HAS NEWS IN SIGHT

All we need after the suffering of this crazy pandemic is protection, hug, affection, comfort, and a nest! It is exactly within this concept that the Cocoon Hotel & Resort, in Tulum, one of the most exclusive and untouched corners of the east coast of Mexico, almost on the border with Belize, emerges.

Imagine five large sustainable nests nestled in the exotic jungle, with elements inspired by the blue of the Caribbean Sea and designed within the concept of ecotourism. Altogether there will be three residential cocoons with 204 apartments, two cocoons for the hotel with 167 accommodations and 16 private villas, in Selva Zamá. An innovative project born from the hands of the Spanish architecture and design studio, DNA Barcelona Architects.

The idea is to create a space to escape from everyday life, in an isolated, silent environment that gives the guest the possibility to reconnect with themselves and the local community, Aldeia Zamá. Respect for the ecosystem and biodiversity are part of the signature of the project created from natural materials that minimize the impact of construction. The water collection system will take advantage of the rain and solar panels will be installed to obtain sustainable energy.

Each cocoon will have its own natural pool that simulates a cenote (a place considered sacred by the Mayan people which means “cave with water”), area for sports activities, children’s recreation, bar and restaurant. All connected by gardens and tranquility on the Yucatán Peninsula.

Hotels connected with the local community and with projects aimed at preserving the environment deserve our respect. More and more we have to worry about what we leave in the places we go through. Thus, we are happy to do our part and with the certainty that we are leaving a clean world for the next generations.

Think about it with affection. The world is beautiful and we need to take good care of it.
