THE INSTIGATING CROSSING OF THE ATACAMA – UYUNI

There was a time when making the crossing between the Atacama Desert in northern Chile and the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia was synonymous with being in a pickle. Now, this coveted adventure has earned a seal of trust. The Explora group, known for offering quality service in remote and spectacular destinations, transforms this dream into a reality full of care and pampering.

That this crossing populates the imagination of many people … is nothing new. But, until now, the reports found on the Internet used to be discouraging. There was little comfort along the way and lack of structure on this beautiful and at the same time inhospitable route. Know that this has changed. The Atacama-Uyuni Crossing can be done safely from April to December 2021, in the dry season, in 4×4 cars, accompanied by a specialized guide and local driver, with stops at incredible, comfortable, essential luxury campsites, recently built in Ramaditas, Chituca and Uyuni, created by Explora in partnership with local families from the Altiplano. Perfection.

Imagine leaving the most arid desert on the planet, the Atacama, in a Chilean volcanic region full of terracotta mountains, which is one of the most impressive natural settings I have ever seen in my life, until I found the infinite whiteness of the largest salt flat in the world, the Salar de Uyuni, in a sparsely inhabited region of Bolivia, far from civilization, with the most starry sky of life and covered with deep silence. It is certainly for those who want to live a unique experience of isolation and connection with nature.

Taking into account that it is necessary to acclimatize, depending on the altitude, the trip can take 8 or 10 days. As I am in a moment to enjoy the path and enjoy the road, I indicate even the slowest route of 10 days. Passing through geothermal fields, seeing thousands of flamingos, flocks of vicuñas, colorful lagoons and surreal landscapes is a total dream.

I hope to have inspired you with this incredible destination for 2021. Dreaming and programming is necessary. We have been at home for more than five months and I can’t wait to go back to the beauty of this world again.

CASANA, NATURE AND DISCREET LUXURY IN CONNECTION

That Brazil is incredible in terms of natural beauty, needless to say. So, imagine enjoying one of the most beautiful and quiet beaches in the northeast – Praia do Preá – in a recently inaugurated sand hotel with an innovative concept of hospitality. Ostentation leaves the scene and the curtains open for ultra personalized service, with total focus on the privacy of the guests. Perfect Combo!

With the relaxed atmosphere of a beach house, the Casana opened its doors in 2019, in the state of Ceará, with only eight elegant bungalows built between white sand dunes and sparkling water lagoons. Without neglecting for even an instant sustainability, the hotel was designed by Natália and Jimmy, the owner couple, to serve with excellence the most demanding guests, always in direct connection with nature.

He is Swedish, with a stamped passport in more than 110 countries. She is Brazilian, born in the capital of Ceará. They met while practicing Kitesurf and decided to undertake in the surroundings of Jericoacoara. Perfect winds for kitesurfing are constantly blowing on this curve in Brazil and of course the sport is part of the attractions of Casana, after all the idea of the project came exactly from this breeze.

Among the peculiarities of Casana is the check in done in the bungalow itself, which incidentally has the characteristic of combining sophistication with practicality. Some accommodations have a private pool and hot tub. The hammocks, which are the face of the northeast, are scattered everywhere inviting you to a sweet swing.

Gastronomy is another highlight. Meals are served at the times chosen by each guest, using seasonal, organic, fresh ingredients and valuing the integration with the local community.

Casana was already born in the vanguard of tourism and proposes a super exclusive accommodation in tune with the surrounding environment, on a plot of more than 10 thousand square meters.

WHERE I’D BE NOW IF COVID HAD ALLOWED…

Life is full of surprises. Some good and some not so good. Who would have guessed that the coronavirus would stop the world this way? We’re all at the shipyard waiting for the pandemic to pass. If we weren’t in quarantine, I would be embarking this week for the Atacama Desert, in Chile, and I had the intention of combining that destination with the unusual Salar de Uyuni, in Bolivia. But … dream postponed.

As these countries are neighbors, it is “relatively” easy to cross from one to the other. It is necessary to take into account the altitude, the adversities of having to cross the Andes, the precariousness of the roads and the lack of connection by cell phone. But the beauty of the scenery is so great that it is worth the effort. It is one of those trips that makes us feel small in the face of the force of nature.

It would have been my second experience in the Atacama Desert and this time I would have shared the lodging between the charming hotels Alto Atacama and Tierra Atacama to review those imposing landscapes surrounded by a belt of volcanoes and to trail between lagoons, dunes, giant cacti, salt flats and geysers. A place that deserves a lot of comings and goings because although it looks like an arid region, it has no monotony! Its geography is very unique and of an amazing diversity.

Alto Atacama was built in adobe, totally in balance with nature, next to the ruins of Pukara Quitor. It is very exclusive. It has only 42 houses, which is important to think about in this moment of post-pandemic recovery, and is only three kilometers from the village of San Pedro de Atacama.

Tierra Atacama is another oasis of comfort and exclusivity in the desert. It also has a great responsibility with the environment and harmony with nature. It is two kilometers from San Pedro de Atacama and has the Licancabur volcano as a backdrop. A luxury!

The hotels themselves offer a beautiful menu of tours of Atacama. Among them are: Valley of the Moon and Death, Salar de Tara, Altiplano Lagoons, Geyser del Tatio, Puritama Hot Springs, climbing one of the many volcanoes in the region and even stretching to the Salar de Uyuni. And that was exactly my intention, to visit the largest salt desert in the world, in neighboring Bolivia, and to live a super experience staying at the Salt Palace, on the edge of the salt flat, 600 kilometers from La Paz. The hotel is very cozy, sophisticated and modern. It is a privilege to stay there to see the Salar de Uyuni, the Eduardo Avaroa Natural Reserve, the Colorada Lagoon full of flamingos, the Manãna Sun Geyser, the Polques hot springs, the cities of Sucre and Potosi.

Isn’t it awesome? Nature trips will be on the rise as soon as we can take flight. Chile and Bolivia await me. I’ll be there soon.

THE SUN SHINES AGAIN IN TUSCANY

That everything will pass we already know. Social isolation brought by the coronavirus has its days counted. It is just a matter of time, reflection, patience, faith, recovery … The good news is that Europe, which has suffered so much from the pandemic, is beginning to show signs of hope. The borders of European countries will be opened gradually from mid-June and those destinations that touch our hearts will speak louder. Tuscany, in Italy, is one of them. Medieval villages, green hills, vineyards as far as the eye can see and a gastronomy that asks to be tasted without haste.

I have a very special affection for Italy because I have many friends in the country. Returning to Tuscany always makes my heart happy. Florence and all its Renaissance art. The tradition of the Palio Festival in Siena. Montepulciano’s architectural legacy. The stone alleys of San Gimignano. The famous Montalcino wines. The walls of the nice city of Lucca (my son’s name). Nearby is the Tower of Pisa. The beautiful Arezzo and the neighboring Cortona that served as the setting for the film Under the Tuscan Sun. How can you not fall in love and want to go back?

To explore Tuscany it is worth choosing a special corner to call your own, rent a car and get lost in and out of the villages. The Laticastelli hotel, in the municipality of Rapolano Terme, is preparing to reopen its doors in early July. It is half an hour from Siena, in the heart of Tuscany. It is one of those places to immerse yourself in local traditions and live good experiences. Total care will be taken with the new hygiene and disinfection protocols. Initially, the number of available accommodations will be reduced. Check in and check out will be done online. Breakfast will be served directly from the room. The restaurant will operate with a reduced number of reservations and more space between tables. Life begins to show signs of tranquility.

May the world recover soon from this very difficult phase.

MOTHER’S DAY AND SUSTAINABILITY ON THE RISE

Mother’s Day is coming up. A date that in 2020 will be celebrated in a very different way than it usually is. Perhaps the affection is from a distance, if you are confined away from your mother. Maybe you can prepare a picnic in the garden or a nice lunch for her. But you may want to plan a post-pandemic getaway to live out good stories with your mother. So it’s worth thinking very responsibly and making good choices when this scare goes away. Sustainable hotels with a focus on preserving the environment, will be the next big thing. I suggest two incredible hotels.

One of them is in Ubud, Indonesia. It’s the Bamboo Indah Hotel. A perfect corner of the world to live days of peace and spirituality, with a great comfort and in contact with nature. The philosophy of the boutique hotel is based on sustainability and has extreme respect for nature in which it was built. Old Balinese houses form the body of the hotel and some accommodations were made in bamboo, integrated into the context. The pools, which are made of volcanic stone, do not receive chemicals in their cleaning process. The energy is solar. The garbage is recycled. The kitchen is supplied by the hotel’s own organic vegetable garden. And the workforce used prioritizes the local community. A very special place!

The other is one of the most sustainable and exclusive hotels I have ever had the privilege of visiting in the world, The Brando. The secret paradise of actor Marlon Brando, on the island of Tetiaroa, in French Polynesia. There, nature is taken very seriously. Electricity is generated by solar panels. The cooling system uses the cold water from the bottom of the sea and is powered by water pressure using very little energy. The hotel is on its way to becoming carbon neutral. In addition, with an unusual system, it has managed to reduce the amount of mosquitoes on the island by more than 90% through sterilization. These are just some interesting points of this phenomenal place.

Two places I’m sure your mom will love to receive as a post-pandemic gift card.

KEUKENHOF TO COLOR THE SOUL

Every year the show repeats itself in the Dutch spring. Thousands of tulip bulbs bloom and enchant the world with their beauty. The Keukenhof Park in Lisse, 40 kilometers from Amsterdam, opens its doors to the public for 50 days from mid-March to May. But in 2020, the coronavirus did the favor of disrupting everything. The Netherlands declared isolation until June 1, so the park will be closed. What a shame!

However, the good news is that we can visit the park by entering Keukenhof.nl. There are several videos and beautiful photos of the park without visitors and with its 7 million flowers giving a show. The show continues! Even if the doors are closed. The tulips are there and are worth visiting virtually.

I hope that next year we will be free of this invisible enemy to visit the Netherlands during the spring. It is one of those places that is worth going to at least once in your life.

For the moment, stay home. Take care of yourself a lot. This too shall pass!

WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE PARIS

April, A little holiday rolling during the spring in Paris and how are we? Traveling on the sofa and dying to see the City of Light again, toasting to the sunny days with a beautiful glass of champagne, feeling the smell of croissants coming out of the oven, sitting in a good cafe to watch life happen without haste. But, until this happens in practice, we will see Paris on the small screen, from home.

For starters, I suggest the French series Dix pour Cent which is already in its fourth season and shows behind the scenes of an agency in charge of taking care of the career of great talents, some of Paris’ most beloved postcards, iconic hotels and the delicious movement in the streets. It’s a great way to get inside the screen.

Those who have not yet seen the film Midnight in Paris directed by Woody Allen have the chance to immerse themselves during quarantine in the romantic and nostalgic Paris where the writer Gil (Owen Wilson) takes night trips. Surprisingly at the bells ringing at midnight he is transported to 1920, the golden age of France, where he experiences great moments.

Also watch Amélie which received several Oscar nominations and had a surreal box office during its release. Arriving in Paris from a country town, Amélie moves to Montmartre, where she works as a waitress. She starred in many scenes in the beautiful Parisian landscape as she discovered that helping others can change her world. It’s worth the popcorn session!

And this way we can reminisce this city full of personality, which is sewn by art, history, gastronomy and fashion. Soon Paris will receive us resplendent and with open arms.

For now it’s time to protect yourself and stay home.

Traveling Through the Screen

Hello, my people! If the moment calls for caution in displacements around the world due to the coronavirus, we can travel without leaving home. There are so many incredible places in this world that have served as a location for movies and series. And that’s where we’re going…

BARCELONA, SPAIN – VICKY CRISTINA BARCELONA. A Woody Allen film starring actress Penélope Cruz, who won the Oscar for best supporting actress for her brilliant performance in this romantic tangle. As a backdrop, the artistic city of Barcelona gives the perfect touch, with works by Gaudí, such as Parque Guell, La Pedrera and Casa Batlló. A city I love and a movie I’ve watched several times and recommend.

ROME, ITALY – THE GREAT BEAUTY. This is a city that has the power to make me shiver with its tremendous historical legacy. And it has served as the stage for many of Fellini’s films. For Roma is the protagonist of the feature by Paolo Sorrentino, winner of the Oscar for best foreign film. Everything revolves around Jep, a writer who goes through a period of stagnation after launching a masterpiece. The imposing Colosseum and the streets of Rome, such as Via Veneto, accompany Jep’s walks and reflections. We follow him on this side of the screen.

AIT BEN HADD, MOROCCO – GAME OF THRONES. The American series, created by David Benioff, was well applauded by critics and received several awards, including Emmy and Golden Globe awards. When visiting the village of Ait Ben Haddou, in Morocco, I felt like I was on the set. This was one of the locations used for filming the episodes. The 11th century village is a step back in time and a tremendous journey. Amazing!

TOKYO, JAPAN – LOST IN TRANSLATION. This film was shot in the effervescent city of Tokyo. The plot tells the story of an actor who goes to the Japanese capital to shoot a commercial. Due to the time zone, he is unable to sleep and goes to the hotel bar, where he meets young Charlotte. Together, they walk through the streets of Tokyo, trying to find each other. A treat for the eyes. Tokyo is an exciting city. It needs to be translated without haste.

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – RIO. A delicious adventure that tells the story of the blue macaw that was born in Brazil, but was captured and raised in the United States. To keep the species almost in extinction, Blu is brought to Brazil to date Jade. The couple of macaws live dangerous moments while flying around the city and get into trouble. Rio’s postcards steal the spotlight: Christ the Redeemer, Sugar Loaf, Ipanema … The animation was directed by Carlos Saldanha in an American studio. Worth watching!

DE VOLTA AO NANNAI

Quando a experiência é incrível, a gente volta. Uma, duas, três vezes. Ou até mais. Minha paixão pelo nordeste do Brasil é antiga! E o estado de Pernambuco guarda alguns paraísos que fazem meu coração bater mais forte. Muro Alto, pertinho da famosa Porto de Galinhas, é um deles. Quer saber por quê? Imagina uma barreira de corais que forma piscinas naturais de água cristalina, azul, quente, cheia de peixinhos coloridos. O spa ocupa um prédio lindo junto à boutique. Uma dobradinha que é ponto alto do Nannai.

WHEN YOU NEED TO RELAX

Sometimes, all we need on a trip is to find the perfect place to rest. We live in an increasingly fast-paced world and relaxation is necessary. In fact, fundamental. How about taking a few days to wake up without haste, on a beautiful mountain in Switzerland, facing a lake that looks like a painting, have breakfast at any time you want, have time to meditate, take care of your body and soul, read a good book, eat very well, enjoy a respectful swimming pool and not have to leave the hotel for anything. Are you up for it?

My tip is the idyllic Villa Honegg, in Ennetbürgen. A serene, elegant, romantic hotel, with a wonderful location and a jaw dropping swimming pool. In fact it is even difficult to say if what you like best is the view of the Alps or the hotel itself. It occupies a mountain house built in 1905 that has undergone a thorough renovation. It has only 23 rooms, on Mount Bürgenstock, 20 minutes from the beautiful city of Lucerne.

You know a place that really invites you to slow down? It’s the Villa Honegg. First, because the rooms have a beautiful and cozy decor, with that nice mountain feel. Then, because you will be away from the noise of cars. The sounds you hear most throughout the day will be the birds and the little bells on the neck of the cows. In addition, the service is impeccable. Imagine being able to have a super breakfast until 2 pm wherever you want: on the terrace or in your room. For lunch and dinner you don’t even need to go out because the restaurant is super awarded and will certainly please you. But, the pool is the highlight. It is ranked among the 100 most incredible in the world. It is all aluminum, has a constant temperature of 34 degrees and even when it is snowing, it is perfect.

To exercise there are several mountain trails for hiking and if you want more peace and quiet, the hotel’s gym is great and has an excellent spa.

You can start packing to relax in Switzerland. Just don’t forget to choose a good book.
