Have you ever heard of the “Skin Flooding” technique? A trend on TikTok in 2023, this technique consists of creating four layers of hydration on the skin with different textures and hydrating active ingredients. With your skin properly cleansed, you should first spray thermal water all over your face, then apply a gel or two serums with moisturizing active ingredients and finally, a cream or oil the moisturizer.

From the lightest and most liquid product to the densest, the idea is to “seal” and maintain hydration on the face for longer, retaining water in the skin and thus keeping it healthier, protected and away from dryness. Experts recommend this technique for dry and/or mature skin, as it tends to be more affected by flaking, itching, sensitivity and even roughness.

Photo: Pexels

“Which active ingredients should I use?” Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, niacinamide and vegetable oils are the favorite active ingredients for moisturizing the skin. In the long term, the result is softer skin and a protected skin barrier.

Layers of products can end up leaving the skin with an extra glow and even a slightly “oily” appearance. Therefore, prefer to follow this routine at night, before going to sleep.

Who already follows the Skin Flooding technique? And who wants to try it out?

Some skincare actives have gone beyond skin care and are now migrating to haircare products, complementing scalp and hair care. In fact, just like the skin, hair also needs a specific care routine, always aiming at the health and well-being of the region.

Did you know that to keep your hair healthy and strong, the main care must be given to the skin of the scalp? To understand the needs of your hair and scalp, it is very important to consult a trichologist or dermatologist.

Photo: Pexels

Regarding the skincare actives that have reached the haircare products, attention: skincare products cannot necessarily be applied directly to the hair. Understand below how actives can be found in specific hair products and how they act on this part of the body.

Aloe Vera

Photo: Pexels

Aloe Vera is already known as a versatile active in different steps of the beauty routine. Also known as aloe, it can be applied directly to the scalp, helping to prevent hair loss. And of course, it can also be used on the lengths of the hair, acting as an anti-inflammatory and with a calming effect.

Hyaluronic Acid

Photo: Pexels

Hyaluronic acid is known for deeply moisturizing all skin types, in the right measure, besides reducing wrinkles, expression lines, and even dark circles under the eyes. In shampoos and creams, this popular active ingredient fills the hair fiber, controls frizz, reduces breakage, and even intensifies shine, leaving the hair properly hydrated.

The tip is to apply a mask with this active ingredient all over the hair before going to sleep – to wake up with impeccable and super hydrated hair the next day.

Thermal Water

Photo: Pexels

Rich in minerals that guarantee countless benefits to the skin, reinforcing hydration and the region’s natural defenses, thermal water can be sprayed directly on the hair, helping to restore hair strands, besides having moisturizing and anti-frizz action. This product can be used especially when you feel your hair more fragile after periods of exposure to the sun, sea, or pool.

Cocoa Butter

Photo: Pexels

If you used to use cocoa butter to recover dry and flaky skin on your lips, get ready to find it in the hair version, becoming an important active ingredient to help moisturize dry hair, controlling frizz, and increasing the production of proteins in the hair fiber.

We really want to know: which of these actives have you already used on your hair and which ones were you curious to test?

Acne is a type of skin condition that causes the dreaded pimples and blackheads. This happens through inflammation that affects the sebaceous glands and follicles in different areas of the body. But after all, what can cause acne? The answer is simple: different factors, ranging from genetics to diet, lifestyle, and hormonal changes such as the use of contraceptives.

Photo: Pexels

To fight acne, there are several treatments, products and even habits we can adopt. However, in order to understand what is most recommended for your skin type and acne, it is very important to consult a dermatologist, okay?

Healthy Habits

Photo: Pexels

On a daily basis, it is important to maintain a balanced diet, besides keeping the skin and body hydrated with an adequate intake of water (around 3 liters) and, of course, also maintaining a regular physical activity routine.

Daily Cleansing

In your skincare routine, try to include products that are specific to your skin type and non-comedogenic, i.e., that will not clog pores or make your skin oily.

Photo: Pexels

Keep cleansing your skin in the morning and just before bedtime, removing all previously used products with a cleanser and then with a facial soap – liquid, foam or gel.

In excess, or with inadequate products, cleansing can cause a rebound effect on the skin, leaving it even oilier and with more acne.

Hydration

Photo: Pexels

Even oily and/or acne-prone skin needs moisturizing – and that has nothing to do with making it oilier. With the right product, you can keep your skin moisturized to the right extent! Just choose oil-free products with a more comfortable texture for this type of skin, such as gel, gel-cream, or serum products.

Sun Protection

Don’t forget to protect your skin too, after all, blackheads and pimples can leave stains and marks on the skin – and they can darken if the skin is exposed to the sun without protection. Choose a sunscreen with a dry touch and sebum-regulating actives, so you guarantee skin protection and treatment at the same time.

Photo: Pexels

In addition, another option is to choose a sunscreen with color and that even presents whitening action, so you can already reduce the color of some spots that were left on the skin and still avoid the appearance of new ones.

Acids

Some acids can help treat acne. They are:

Photo: Pexels

  • Glycolic Acid, to keep pores free of sebum, excess keratin and dead cells. This acid helps to lighten pimples spots and even prevents the formation of new acnes;
  • Salicylic Acid, gently exfoliates the skin, helping to remove surface impurities. This acid unclogs the pores and helps to improve the appearance of blackheads, thus preventing the formation of new lesions;
  • Mandelic Acid, has fungicidal and antibacterial action, helping to control and prevent oiliness and the formation of new acnes. In addition, it has high hydration power.

Excess of Products

Photo: Pexels

Prefer to follow a skincare routine with few steps, but equally effective, so you avoid overloading your skin with numerous products. This can end up clogging the pores and consequently increasing the production of sebum and even causing the appearance of more pimples and blackheads.

Treatments

Photo: Pexels

Some treatments can be effective in helping to control blackheads and pimples, as well as removing those dreaded spots that have been left behind. Skin cleansing and the use of technologies such as lasers, pulsed light, and phototherapy can help improve the skin – especially when combined with other conventional treatments, i.e., the use of specific products.

So, how do you take care of your acne? What has helped you the most in this process?

Glowy skin is the big beauty trend of the last few years and basically consists of having skin that looks luminous, radiant and most importantly: healthy! For this, the skin prep must start still (and mainly!) during the skincare routine, with products suitable for your skin type.

Photo: Glossier

Therefore, this effect can be achieved by all skin types, just by adapting the products. Dry skin requires products with creamier and emollient formulas, while oily skin can use gels, serums and others with lighter textures. For all skin types, the feeling that glow brings is softness, hydration, freshness, and radiance. Everything we want, right?

Moreover, maintain a regular skincare routine, both in the morning and at night, using the proper products for each step of the routine. What is essential? Never skip the cleansing, moisturizing, and protection steps, as they will make all the difference in the skin’s texture and final result.

Photo: Shania Desirae via Pinterest

Another step to enhance skin glow is during makeup application. You can start with a luminous primer, or mix a few drops of liquid highlighter with a very light foundation, or a BB Cream. The result: skin with a natural effect, where the subtle glow seems to come from within.

Next, if you want an even more glow to your skin, re-apply highlighter (the texture is up to you) to the high points of the face, such as the temples, below the eyebrows, the cupid’s bow, and the tip of the nose.

You may or may not punctually correct some areas of the face with concealer, such as the dark circle area and some blemishes. And well, as the idea is to “reflect” a more natural skin, bet on details of the makeup and leave the heavier products aside. Apply a little blush, slightly smoke the eyes, and if you think it’s necessary, fill in and comb the eyebrows.

If you find it necessary, you can apply a little translucent powder to some areas of the face that can get oily faster, such as the T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin). In addition, you can also use a makeup setting spray to keep everything in place longer.

So, have you set aside the products to prepare your glowy skin?

Clean beauty has become a hot topic in recent years, and for good reason—the beauty industry is minimally regulated in the United States and many skincare products contain ingredients that are known to be toxic for our health. Because of this, it’s extremely important that you do your own research on products and brands you’re interested in to determine their ingredients are safe to use everyday. One amazing resource  to do this is on the Skin Deep section of the EWG website (short for Environmental Working Group), which rates products using their standards for transparency and health. Another way to select clean skincare brands is to utilize retailers that have a designated section for showcasing brands that use non-toxic ingredients. Sephora has their “clean at Sephora” stamp, while BlueMercury has their “Conscious Beauty” section, and The Detox Market curates the best in clean beauty. These retailers do the background checks for us and make discovering and shopping clean beauty easy.

Even with all the tools we have available for research and shopping, it can still be confusing on which brands are not only clean but also deliver real results. Since it can also be time consuming to investigate on your own, we thought it would be helpful to share some of the clean skincare brands you should have on your radar. The below 5 brands use non-toxic ingredients that work to address all of your skin concerns and provide results you can see.

Drunk Elephant: Known for their signature colorful packaging, Drunk Elephant has one of the widest selections of non-toxic products. Whether you’re looking for a vitamin C serum, a hyaluronic acid, soothing Marula oil, or tinted sunscreen, Drunk Elephant has all your skincare needs covered. Their T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial is a fan favorite for it’s resurfacing and exfoliating abilities—it contains an AHA blend (including glycolic and lactic acids) to gently resurface the skin to improve texture and clarity.

Biossance: As one of the only Environmental Working Group (aka EWG) verified skincare brands on the market, Biossance delivers real results while using clean ingredients you can feel confident putting on your skin everyday. The Squalane + Vitamin C Rose Oil is one of their best products as it visibly brightens the skin while simultaneously locking in moisture.

Caudalie: This classic French skincare brand that uses clean ingredients to deliver real results. The Vinoperfect Anti Dark Spot Serum is one of their most beloved products as it eliminates dark spots, evens skin tone, and boosts overall radiance—wear this one underneath your makeup and your skin will be seriously glowing. Their Beauty Elixir can also be found in most makeup bags—this toning mist sets and refreshes makeup while providing an instant glow.

Beautycounter: Not only does this brand create luxurious products that actually work, but their list of banned ingredients is one of the most extensive in the space (which means they go above and beyond to ensure their products are as clean as possible). Their Countertime Antioxidant Soft Cream is a fan favorite for its ability to combat the effects of exposure to UV rays and environmental damage.

Tata Harper: This luxurious brand’s philosophy is that more active ingredients equals more results, so they offer clean products that really work. The Repairative Moisturizer and Regenerating Cleanser are a match made in skincare heaven, containing powerful ingredients like hyaluronic acid, fresh enzymes, and botanical oils that work together to create a radiant complexion.

A good face wash is one of the keys to glowing skin and keeping breakouts at bay. You want to look for one that removes dirt, makeup, and impurities without stripping the skin of moisture and natural oils. If your skin is stripped of healthy oils, it will make your face feel tight and actually cause your skin to produce even more oil (which may make your already oily skin even more oily). But finding the right one for your skin can be difficult since everyone’s skin is unique and reacts to products and ingredients differently. Consulting your dermatologist is the safest bet for finding the right formula for you, but if that’s not an option we’re here to help by outlining a few of the most popular products for this skin type—Below are 5 of the best face washes for oily skin.

Avène Cleansing Foam ($20): This foaming cleanser from cult-favorite French pharmacy brand Avéne removes dirt and excess oil without overdoing it, and is even gentle enough for sensitive skin.

First Aid Beauty Pure Skin Cleanser ($21): Not only does this non-toxic cleanser remove dirt and makeup without stripping skin, it also helps calm irritation (thanks to the ingredient allantoin) and protects skin from pollution.

SkinCeuticals Clarifying Exfoliating Cleanser ($35): This cleanser is especially good for acne-prone skin, as the glycolic and salicylic acids help unclog pores and clear blemishes while they exfoliate dead skin.

Drunk Elephant Beste No. 9 Jelly Cleanser ($32): If you’re looking for a clean brand that also really works, Drunk Elephant is it. This gel cleanser turns into a perfectly gentle foam that absorbs excess oils to leave you with clear, matte skin.

La Roche-Posay Micellar Water Ultra ($16): This all-in-one oil and makeup remover clears away dirt and grime in one swipe of a cotton pad. It’s also great for double-cleansing if that’s part of your routine.

Since most of us are spending most of our time at home these days, we thought it was the perfect time to talk about masks. Face masks, both sheet masks and cream masques, are an essential part of a good skincare regimen but since they can be time consuming, they are usually the first thing to go when our schedules get busy. But a quality mask can add so much value to your skincare routine—from hydration to exfoliation to detoxification. Whether your skin is sensitive, oily, acne-prone, dry, or combination, there’s a mask out there tailored to your skin’s needs. Today we’re sharing the best masks for whatever your skin is looking for to help guide you if you’re interested in adding one to your routine.

Best for Exfoliating:

Photo: Summer Fridays

While all of Summer Fridays products are amazing, we’re particularly fond of the Overtime Mask. This clarifying mask gently exfoliates dead skin cells using pumpkin and apricot seed powder to reveal brighter, softer skin. The Overtime Mask is mild enough that it won’t irritate sensitive skin, but powerful enough to polish congested skin and promote cell turnover. Simply apply the mask to clean skin, leave on for 10 minutes, and use warm water to wash off and reveal glowing skin.

Drunk Elephant’s T.L.C. Sukari Babyfacial is a cult-favorite product for a reason—it works. The AHA/BHA resurfacer gently exfoliates away dead skin cells to help improve skin texture and reveal a clearer, more youthful appearance. This is the perfect product for combating dullness, as the combination of glycolic, tartaric, citric and salicylic acids work together to brighten skin without any redness or irritation (so it’s even safe for sensitive skin types). To use the Sukari Babyfacial, you’ll apply a layer to clean skin, leave on for 20 minutes, rinse off with warm water, and finish off with a soothing oil or serum and moisturizer of your choice.

Best for Hydrating:

Bioeffect’s Imprinting Hydrogel Mask is one of those products almost every dermatologist will recommend to you, as the brand’s ingredients are both potent and effective (without causing breakouts). This ultra-hydrating sheet mask is the perfect solution for perpetually dry skin or to provide your skin with a major source of moisture after traveling (as we all know how dehydrating a plane is). The Imprinting Hydrogel Mask is safe for all skin types and provides deep hydration by replenishing skin with moisture.

Truthfully all of Tatcha’s products are incredible, but since we’re focusing on hydration the Luminous Dewy Skin Sheet Mask takes the top spot. This sheet mask delivers a dewy glow by giving your skin a huge boost of hydration through botanical oils and extracts. The gentle formula is inspired by Japanese beauty treatments and will leave your skin moisturized and glowing after just one 15-minute use.

Best for Restoration:

SkinCeuticals’ Biocellulose Restorative Masque is a healing sheet mask for damages or sensitive skin. It works wonders for those with hypersensitive skin or post-treatment as it cools skin and soothes irritation using biofibers infused with water. This gentle mask provides instant comfort and relief while it restores irritated or damaged skin back to a healthy complexion.

Best for Detoxifying:

Caudalie’s non-toxic formulas can be found in the medicine cabinets of most skincare lovers around the globe, and their Instant Detox Mask deserves a gold star. This clay mask cleans out excess oil from pores (while also tightening them) to leave skin feeling fresh and glowing. The pink clay absorbs   blackhead-causing dirt while the essential oils help fight off bacteria, preventing future breakouts as well.

GlamGlow’s Supermud Charcoal Instant Treatment Mask uses exfoliating acids and activated charcoal to unclog pores and clarify your complexion. Using a thin layer, you simply apply the mask to clean skin and leave on until it hardens. Once the clay mask feels firm on your skin, rinse off with warm water to reveal brighter skin and tighter pores.

As far as moisturizers go, there are endless options to choose from—which can make it extremely difficult to actually choose one. From the daytime formulas to overnight formulas and even tinted moisturizers, it can be hard to sort through each product to determine which one is right for you. So instead of giving you a massive 20-product list, we decided to bring you the 5 best moisturizers for each category—from the top formula to use under makeup that gives you glowing skin underneath to the non-toxic moisturizer that leaves your skin feeling plump and hydrated for hours. Below are our favorite formulas for each category.

Best Clean Formula: Biossance Squalane + Omega Repair Cream ($58)

Biossance Squalane + Omega Repair Cream

Biossance has been one of the buzziest skincare lines since it burst on the scene a few years ago, creating major waves for being one of the only clean skincare lines that actually works. Their Squalane + Omega Repair Cream is a thick, non-greasy formula perfect for both the morning and evenings that will deliver the hydration your skin needs. It contains omega fatty acids plus ceramide which plumps the skin while supporting it’s natural barrier. The thick formula never feels heavy but delivers major moisture for even the dryest of skin types.

Best For Under Makeup: La Mer Moisturizing Cream ($180)

The Best Face Moisturizers for 2020 Camila Coelho

Crème de La Mer Moisturizing Cream

La Mer is known for their luxurious skin products that deliver serious results, and this one is no different. The La Mer Moisturizing Cream is an iconic product for a reason—it’s infused with cell-supporting Miracle Broth to heal away dry skin and protect against pollution. The secret to using this product is warming it for a few seconds in your hands until it melts and then pressing it gently into your skin. This gives you a natural glow that becomes the perfect palette for applying makeup over, which is why many top makeup artists use this to prep the skin before they begin their makeup application. It’s moisturizing and skin plumping without ever feeling greasy, making it the ideal canvas for makeup.

Best For Eyes: SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Eye Complex ($98)

The Best Face Moisturizers for 2020 Camila Coelho

SkinCeuticals A.G.E. Eye Complex

Dark circles, be gone! SkinCeuticals’ A.G.E. Eye Complex instantly reduces the appearance of dark circles, crow’s feet, and puffiness. The antiwrinkle cream also helps firm the skin under the eyes (which we all know is the most fragile and one of the first places to start losing elasticity) and reduce the appearance of any sagging. This is the ultimate product for anyone that suffers from persistent dark circles, or when you just need an extra boost after a night of less-than optimal sleep. One quick application under the eyes and you’ll be able to fool everyone into thinking you got a full night’s rest.

Best Multipurpose Product: UBeauty Resurfacing Compound ($148)

The Best Face Moisturizers for 2020 Camila Coelho

UBeauty Resurfacing Compound

Talk about a product that works double-duty—U Beauty’s Resurfacing Compound is like three products in one. Made in Italy, it helps improve skin’s texture and minimize pores while resurfacing and renewing your complexion. Just apply a few pumps morning and night after cleansing (no need for toner!), and within a few days your skin will appear brighter, plumper, and more even. If your skin is more on the dry side, you’ll probably want to add another moisturizer on top, but if you have normal to oily skin this should stand well on it’s own. It also works particularly well in humid weather because it’s never greasy or oily.

Best For Overnight: Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream ($100)

The Best Face Moisturizers for 2020 Camila Coelho

Photo: Charlotte Tilbury

Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream Moisturizer

Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Cream is as iconic as products get—and it’s easy to understand why once you start using it. It visibly plumps the skin using bionymph peptides and delivers a burst of hydration using hyaluronic acid, all while softening the skin with shea butter. Tapping Magic Cream into your cheeks and underage area also helps de-puff. The thick formula is great for overnight because although it absorbs into the skin quickly, it really seals in moisture so that 8 hours later you’ll wake up still feeling hydrated (especially if you suffer from ultra-dry skin).

Vitamin C serums are super buzzy right now in the beauty industry and on social media, but what are they really? And what are they used for? Every beauty industry expert will tell you they’re the key to glowing skin, but why? Let’s break it down.

When applied to the skin, vitamin C brightens dull complexions and stimulates collagen production to help prevent fine lines. It also has antioxidant properties, which help protect the skin from airborne toxins and pollutants. It can even help reverse some of the damage that’s already been done to the skin. So bottom line—it helps your skin glow while also protecting it from future signs of aging.

You want to make sure you’re using a good vitamin C formula for best results. SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic is a fan-favorite for a reason: It delivers serious results. The bottle is pricey, but it contains 15% vitamin C, plus 1% vitamin E to help protect the skin from environmental pollutants. Another great option is Drunk Elephant’s C-Firma Vitamin C Serum. Not only does this formula work, but it’s 100% clean—meaning there’s no toxic chemicals or parabens. Sunday Riley’s C.E.O. Brightening Serum is another great option, offering 15% vitamin C to help combat dull skin. PCA Skin also makes a powerful formula called C-Quench Antioxidant Serum, which also contains hyaluronic acid to keep skin hydrated at the same time.
