Did you know that straight hair – natural or chemically straightened – requires specific care? This is because the structure of the strands is completely different and, normally, chemically straightened hair is more fragile and loses essential elements for its structure.

Naturally straight hair, on the other hand, tends to be silky and its texture can vary between fine, medium and coarse, where the oil can travel the length of the strand to the ends without difficulty. So, although apparently the same, these two types of hair require different treatments, but always with the aim of keeping them healthy and beautiful.

Although natural straight hair seems to be easier to care for, without the right habits it can end up looking weak and lifeless. With this in mind, Paula Breder, creator of the PB philosophy and founder of a phytocosmetics brand, listed some specific care tips for straight, chemical-free hair.

Care When Washing

Photo: Pexels

One of the peculiarities of naturally straight hair is excess oiliness, because the straight structure of the hair fiber makes it easy for the oil present in the scalp to run down the length of the hair to the ends, often leaving the hair looking greasy and, consequently, heavier. This is not the case, for example, with wavy, curly or frizzy hair.

As this type of hair tends to get oily more easily, it may need shampoos and products with sebum-regulating agents. You also need to be careful about using too many products such as conditioners, synthetic oils, leave-ins and pomades. To avoid excessive oiliness, use a small amount and only on the lengths and ends.

Use A Hair Mask Weekly

Moisturizing straight hair is essential to keep it healthy, loose and well aligned, as well as protecting it when it is exposed to daily aggressions such as sun, wind, rain and pollution.

The idea is to include hydration in your hair care routine once a week, but if you feel that your hair needs extra strength, increase the frequency. Choose moisturizing masks specific to your hair type, designed to meet the real needs of your hair fiber, so you will have all the benefits of the product.

Be careful with heat tools

Photo:  @tata

Photo: Pexels

Let your hair dry naturally, or use a hairdryer on a low heat setting. Straight hair tends to need less heat tools, so use this to your advantage. Avoid frizz and split ends

Frizz and split ends are recurring problems in those with straight hair and tend to be quite annoying, as they become more visible. Coincidentally, most of the time, both negative effects are caused by excessive use of heat, such as hairdryers, straighteners and curling irons, as well as daily exposure to pollution, sun and wind.

To avoid all this, you should use cold-pressed vegetable oils, as they protect your hair from damaging weather conditions. And of course, always keep the cut up to date, trimming is a healthy habit to adopt.

So, what care do you need to take with your naturally straight hair?

Our hair is exposed daily to natural agents, such as exposure to wind, sun, rain and even pollution, in addition to physical aggression caused by the use of dryers, curling irons, straighteners and other tools. All this can end up damaging the hair, leaving it dry, brittle, porous and even with split ends.

Brazilian model Fernanda Marques works with her own image and therefore sees her hair undergo intense transformations with every job. Currently, she has a team that takes special care of her hair, but over the years she has gathered tips shared by different professionals to effectively care for and maintain the health of her hair at home. Check them out:

“I use a moisturizing hair mask at least once a week at home. I choose an appropriate mask for my hair type, which is bleached,” she says. To do this, she applies the mask to her hair and puts on a kind of plastic cap to “warm it up” and thus enhance the hydration. To enhance daily hydration, she uses a repair oil to moisturize the cuticles before bed. “To avoid brittle hair, I invest in products that nourish and repair damage,” she adds.

Photo: @iamfernandamarques

Furthermore, Fernanda revealed that under no circumstances does she sleep with wet hair, as this can damage the hair and even the health of the scalp. “I also take great care when drying my hair. I never squeeze my hair too much, nor tie it up with a towel. Hairdressers I’ve worked with say that it’s best to use a cotton fabric to remove moisture without damaging the hair. This also influences when styling and combing,” she reveals.

Photo:  @iamfernandamarques

She says that it’s important to wash off the shampoo very well and replace the conditioner with a nourishing mask. “I was given these guidelines a few years ago and it’s been working very well. I let the mask act for about 5 minutes before rinsing it off. You don’t need to buy an expensive mask, just choose a product suitable for your hair type”, he reinforces.

Photo: @iamfernandamarques

In addition to specific products for her hair type, the model, who has acted in London, Germany, Miami and Brazil, explains that she prioritizes a balanced diet rich in nutrients, in order to strengthen her hair “from the inside out”. “In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s very important to have these moments of self-care, whether it’s exercising or taking care of your skin and hair. Taking the time to take care of yourself goes far beyond aesthetics, it contributes a lot to our mental health,” she adds.

Which of the model’s tips do you already follow in your hair care routine? And which ones would you like to try out?

Have you undergone chemical hair procedures that altered the structure of your hair and now you want them to return to their natural curvature? To do so, it is essential to go through the hair transition, a process where hair chemicals are set aside, making room for new cuts (in order to remove the strands with chemicals) and products that help keep the hair hydrated, in addition to hairstyles that “disguise” different hair textures..

Photo: Unsplash

To start the transition, you must choose between: cutting the strands that are still chemically treated (known as the big chop) or opting for the natural transition, keeping the chemically treated part until it is the desired size to make the cut. Below, check out some important tips for doing the hair transition.

Big chop

Photo: Unsplash

The big chop is ideal for those who don’t want to spend months with two hair textures during the hair transition. In that case, the strands are super short and must be done by an expert hairdresser, who will evaluate and suggest the best cut options for your hair type.

Cronograma Capilar

Photo: Unsplash

The hair chronogram is a protocol made with treatment masks indicated for the specific needs of the hair and are used in three steps: hydration, nutrition and reconstruction. Each stage of the schedule is done alternately during hair washes and each mask will be used according to what your hair needs.

To understand which steps your hair is asking for more at that moment, it is essential to do a strand porosity test.

Umectação dos Fios

Photo: Unsplash

In addition, you can also include humectation before washing your hair. This process is done as follows: separate the hair into sections and apply vegetable oil along the entire length to the ends, ensuring that the strands are covered by the product.

Let the oil act in the hair for at least two hours, then wash the hair with shampoo to remove all the oil, apply the conditioner, and finish the hair as usual. What is the result? Shinier, softer, frizz-free hair!

So, are you or have you gone through the hair transition?

Maintaining a hair care routine helps the health of the hair and even the scalp. And beyond the shower, hair care and maintenance should also be done before bedtime, in order to guarantee a night’s sleep that also helps in hair treatment. Check out the following tips shared by hairstylist Fernando Torquatto and Brazilian brand Amend, indicated for high performance and hair care in different stages of the beauty routine:

1. Dry the strands completely

Photo: Unsplash

Photo: Unsplash

Sleeping with damp or wet hair is not an option, right? This leaves the hair more fragile and exposed to the proliferation of fungi and bacteria – both on the scalp and on the pillowcase itself. Moreover, the scalp ends up developing seborrheic dermatitis, which is the inflammation in the skin that causes flaking and redness of the region. And more: this habit can also cause hair loss, because of the friction of wet hair with the pillow.

Did you know that hair takes, on average, 24 hours to dry completely naturally? Therefore, apply a thermal protectant on the entire length and dry your hair completely with a hair dryer before going to sleep.

2. Use a silk turban/bonnet

Photo: Unsplash

The satin cap is a great accessory to control those frizzy strands. In addition, the cap helps against loss of moisture and natural oiliness of the scalp, being an excellent ally to avoid tangles and keep the definition of the hair intact.

3. Hairstyles for bedtime are allowed

Photo: Unsplash

Some hairstyles are allowed for the night’s sleep. With comfortable elastic bands and without tying the strands tightly (so as not to cause breakage), you can make low buns or even braids, waking up the next morning with light waves in your hair. “For strands with less volume, the best choice is bigger, thicker braids. The smaller braids, on the other hand, form small curls and, consequently, a larger volume”, indicates Torquatto.

4. Night Humectation

Photo: Unsplash

Humectation is nothing more than the use of vegetable oils all over the hair in order to nourish and strengthen the strands. This technique is indicated for all hair types, textures, and colors, but especially for dry, dry, and frizzy hair, leaving it softer and shinier.

“The first step is to divide the hair into parts, to make it easier when applying. Then just apply the oil by coating each strand. The tip is to concentrate the application on the length and ends of the strands. When you wake up, just wash your hair as usual, removing the oil with the usual procedure, applying shampoo and conditioner”, explains the specialist.

5. Moisturize your hair while you sleep

Nowadays there are some products responsible for taking care of the hair during the hours of sleep, such as protein masks and different hair oils. The nightly hydration, besides being practical and efficient, is responsible for returning moisture to the hair fiber, ensuring shine, softness, and manageable hair the next day.

So, what hair care habits have you adopted before bed?

Recommended and essential for all types of hair, hair oils are rich in active ingredients that take care of the strands in different conditions, pre, post or even during the shower. And yes, even oily hair can benefit from using hair oils, as the product is only applied to the lengths, ends of the strands and sometimes even the roots.

Photo: Unsplash

In addition to the different functions and benefits, some oils can be used on wet or dry hair – it is worth testing to see the hair’s reaction. In addition, you can use this type of product in all seasons, including situations where the hair faces excessive sweating, sea water, swimming pool, and especially the use of thermal tools such as hair dryers, straighteners, and curling irons.

Pay attention to the ingredients! Avoid hair oils with silicone, parabens, petrolatum, mineral oil, among others, which are considered the real villains for the strands. Hairstylist Márcio Sanches, from the renowned beauty salon TP Beauty Lounge (RJ), listed the best oil options to use and take care of your hair in a healthy and effective way.

Wella Professionals Oil Reflections: for all hair types, provides a glossy effect with nutrition and protection of the strands.

Davines Oi Oil: for all hair types, it promotes extraordinary shine and softness, strong detangling and restructuring action, anti-frizz effect and anti-oxidant and anti-free radical action.

Kérastase Blond Absolu Huile Cicaextreme: for extremely bleached blonde hair, it strengthens the sensitized fiber, protects against damage from heat tools and reduces split ends.

SP System Professional Luxe Oil: for dull or dry hair, fights frizz, adds shine and softness without weighing it down.

WeDo Professional Natural Oil: for body and damaged hair, it is great for nourishing and caring for hair and body, as it is made with a blend of natural oils.

Who loves and can’t do without the use of hair oils on a daily basis? Which ones are your favorites?

Our hair is exposed daily to several external factors, such as the sun, pollution, wind, chemical products, heat sources and even the friction of the towel after showering. All of this may seem harmless, but it ends up damaging the strands, which can end up weakening, drying or even falling out. Check out some harmful habits and avoid them now!

Photo: Pexels

Does your hair have a lot of frizz? Your towel can be the big culprit! By rubbing the towel on the hair, we end up causing a more aggressive friction, which consequently causes the dreaded frizz. Try removing excess water from your hair with a microfiber towel or even a cotton T-shirt and feel the difference.

Photo: Pexels

It’s not enough to have “the ideal brush”, there is a right way to comb your hair, especially when it’s wet! Always start by combing your strands from the bottom up, untangling the ends first, then the middle, and finally the roots. Always be gentle, ok?

Excessive washing of hair can end up leaving the strands dull, dry and even brittle, since we are removing the natural and essential oils that maintain the health and protection of the hair – thus, making it more beautiful. The same goes for those who wash the strands very little! That’s because, dirt and accumulated products can end up clogging the scalp pores, causing itching and flaking of the region, in addition to a possible hair loss. Here, balance is everything!

Photo: Pexels

Don’t use conditioner near the hair root, ok? This product is usually heavier than shampoo and therefore can clog the pores on the scalp. This can also cause itchiness and flakiness, leaving your hair feeling heavier and oily! Conditioner should be applied from the ear line down, especially on the tips, which are usually drier.

Photo: Pexels

If you are #teamlonghair and don’t want to cut the strands for anything… think again! It’s very important to trim your hair every 3 months or so, even if it’s just the ends. Over time, the hair forms the dreaded split ends and they can make the strands more brittle, in addition to “delaying” the healthy growth of the strands.

So, what habits do you already follow with your hair and which ones do you need to change?

Some skincare actives have gone beyond skin care and are now migrating to haircare products, complementing scalp and hair care. In fact, just like the skin, hair also needs a specific care routine, always aiming at the health and well-being of the region.

Photo: Pexels

Did you know that to keep your hair healthy and strong, the main care must be given to the skin of the scalp? To understand the needs of your hair and scalp, it is very important to consult a trichologist or dermatologist.

Photo: Pexels

Regarding the skincare actives that have reached the haircare products, attention: skincare products cannot necessarily be applied directly to the hair. Understand below how actives can be found in specific hair products and how they act on this part of the body.

Aloe Vera

Photo: Pexels

Aloe Vera is already known as a versatile active in different steps of the beauty routine. Also known as aloe, it can be applied directly to the scalp, helping to prevent hair loss. And of course, it can also be used on the lengths of the hair, acting as an anti-inflammatory and with a calming effect.

Hyaluronic Acid

Photo: Pexels

Hyaluronic acid is known for deeply moisturizing all skin types, in the right measure, besides reducing wrinkles, expression lines, and even dark circles under the eyes. In shampoos and creams, this popular active ingredient fills the hair fiber, controls frizz, reduces breakage, and even intensifies shine, leaving the hair properly hydrated.

The tip is to apply a mask with this active ingredient all over the hair before going to sleep – to wake up with impeccable and super hydrated hair the next day.

Thermal Water

Photo: Pexels

Rich in minerals that guarantee countless benefits to the skin, reinforcing hydration and the region’s natural defenses, thermal water can be sprayed directly on the hair, helping to restore hair strands, besides having moisturizing and anti-frizz action. This product can be used especially when you feel your hair more fragile after periods of exposure to the sun, sea, or pool.

Cocoa Butter

Photo: Pexels

If you used to use cocoa butter to recover dry and flaky skin on your lips, get ready to find it in the hair version, becoming an important active ingredient to help moisturize dry hair, controlling frizz, and increasing the production of proteins in the hair fiber.

We really want to know: which of these actives have you already used on your hair and which ones were you curious to test?

Summer is synonym of vacations, trips and hot days of lots of fun! However, hair care never rests and should still be reinforced during the hottest season of the year, after all, this is the time when the strands suffer the most aggression. Check out some tips to keep your hair healthy during the summer.

Photo: Pexels

With the routine of beach, pool, sun and lots of wind, hair ends up getting more brittle and dry, so it needs an extra dose of hydration. To cleanse your hair, prefer milder products, free of parabens, salt and sulfates, complementing them with a more moisturizing conditioner.

Photo:  @jutedescomakeup

UVA and UVB rays can stimulate the loss of keratin, causing oxidation, loss of color and dryness of the hair. To avoid this and even help hydration, apply a leave-in with a protection factor, so you create a film on the hair shaft. Reapply the product every time you get out of the water.

Photo: Pexels

Exaggerating sun exposure can burn not only the strands, but also the scalp, which is usually a more sensitive region and can even flake off. To avoid this, try to wear caps and hats during times of high sun exposure and avoid excessive use of hair dryers and hair straighteners.

Photo: Pexels

Since the tendency is for hair to become drier and duller during the summer, avoid washing your hair with hot water, which further stimulates these two aspects. Warm or cold water can be your best friend, restoring the hair’s natural shine.

Photo:  @todecrespa

Photo: Pexels

Pay attention when combing the strands and when detangling them, use a wide-toothed wooden comb, especially if you have thicker hair. Curly and frizzy hair should be styled while still wet, while straight hair can be styled when it is dry.

So, what care do you take with your hair during the summer? And which ones will you adopt from this post we created?

When bleaching the hair, the natural color pigment is removed, causing nutrients, lipids, and other components to be removed, leaving the strands sensitive, fragile, and dry. For this reason, it is important to reinforce at home treatments and at the salon.

To take care of bleached hair it is essential to follow a hair care schedule for hydration, nutrition, and reconstruction of the strands. These treatments avoid the yellowish blonde and restore the life of the hair strands.

Hair that is bleached become very damaged, since this chemical acts directly on the hair fiber and opens the hair cuticles, removing all the pigment inside. With the cuticles open, nutrients, lipids, and the mass of the hair fiber end up also going away.

Photo: @maneaddicts

Photo: @maneaddicts

Avoid excessive use of heat tools, such as diffuser, flat iron, and hair dryer, because they end up making the hair shaft (which is already fragile) even more dry, opaque, and brittle.

Hot water can also damage the hair, leaving it rough and porous, due to the swelling of the cuticle due to heat. The leave-in is an ally of bleached hair, since this product enhances the treatment and recovery of the strands, giving shine and increasing the resistance of the strands to daily damage.

How do you usually take care of your bleached hair?

Intense hair care is a trend and haircare promises to be as popular as skincare. So get your bathroom countertop ready, because today we’re going to teach you how to put together a complete hair care routine – also known as the Capillary Schedule.

Photo: Urilux

The capillary schedule can be divided into three stages: hydration, nutrition and reconstruction. Each one acts in the hair treatment in a specific way and according to the hair’s needs. Check out how each step works and how to include them in your care routine, to leave your hair healthier, more beautiful and softer.

Photo: Maria Orlova via Pexels

Start with the porosity test to understand what your strands need. For this, you will only need:

  • 1 glass of water;
  • 1 strand of your hair.

Place the strand inside the cup and see how it looks.

If the strand floats on the surface: you need hydration;

If the strand neither floats nor sinks: go for nutrition;

If the strand sinks: bet on reconstruction.

Hydration is responsible for returning water to the hair, flexibility against breakage and without that opaque aspect, leaving it softer, lighter, shinier, and without the dreaded split ends.

Nutrition is essential to protect hair against daily external aggressions, which end up causing dryness, frizz, and weakening of the hair fiber. Thus, it is responsible for replenishing the oils that protect the hair, making the cuticles aligned and closed.

Cronograma Capilar Camila Coelho

Diagram: IFoundMyBest.com

Reconstruction is ideal for replenishing hair protein for those who have had chemical processes on their hair and lost hair mass. Are your strands brittle and thin from the use of hot tools, coloring or bleaching? Then this step is especially suggested for you, as it leaves your hair fuller.

Cronograma Capilar Camila Coelho

Diagram: IFoundMyBest.com

The capillary schedule is suitable for all hair types and what changes from one to the other is the sequence of types of masks used on the day of treatment. Oh, and it’s essential to take a break of at least 48 hours between one treatment and another, so it doesn’t overload the strands and the actives effectively penetrate into the hair.

Now we want to know: were you already following a capillary schedule or would you like to try it out?
